LEWISTON — A 20-year-old man was gunned down early Sunday in what state police called a drug-related killing. Two men were charged with murder and more arrests were expected.
Police did not identify the victim Sunday, saying they wanted to contact his relatives first.
The victim was shot in a third-floor apartment at 1 Knox St. at about 1:30 a.m., said spokesman Stephen McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The man died at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston about a half-hour after the shooting. An autopsy was planned Sunday.
Charged with murder are Joseph Jackson, 29, and Jeremiah Moore, 32, who have separate addresses on Elm Street, Lewiston, said McCausland.
They were being held in Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Sunday after being charged after questioning by police, said McCausland.
McCausland said federal and state drug agents helped in the investigation.
He said it was the second drug-related homicide in Lewiston since March 31, when 30-year-old Jeffrey Bradbury of Auburn was stabbed to death.
The stabbing occurred at a Garnett Street apartment where several people had been gathered.
