CentConn captures District I golf tourney

DURHAM, N.H. – Trailing the University of Rhode Island by nine strokes after the first round of the NCAA I District I Golf Championship, Central Connecticut State fired a second-round score of 302 to erase the deficit and post a three-stroke victory over the second-place Rams Sunday.

Third-place Connecticut completed a surprising turnaround, shooting a 301 after compiling a 317 total in the first round. The Huskies’ Greg Yeomans had the best round on the second day, shooting an even par-72.

Providence’s Kevin Magner was the individual winner with a two-of 72-79-149. New Hampshire’s Brian Higgins and Hartford’s Brian Walker finished tied for second at 150 while Yeomans and CentConn’s Kyle Gallo and Terry Ryan were two strokes behind Magner at 151.

The Blue Devils advanced, along with URI and UConn, to the 22-team field NCAA East Regional in New Haven, Conn., from May 16-18. The 1995 Men’s Golf Championship will take place in Columbus, Ohio, from May 24-27.

Maine finished 14th in the District I contest.
