Howlers trip Red Devils

EAST CORINTH – Tina Smith singled, doubled, and drove in a run to lead Penobscot Valley to a 10-8 high school softball upset of host Central Thursday.

Heather Gosslin chipped in with a single and double and winning pitcher Lea Sereyko tripled for the Howlers of Howland.

For the Red Devils, Amy Bracy had two doubles and a single. Bonnie Wood had a double and two singles. Both had two RBIs.

Katahdin 8, Bangor Christian 1

At Sherman Station, the Cougars used a six-run third inning and a fine pitching performance from Terri Craig to beat the Patriots.

Craig tossed a two-hitter, garnishing eight strikouts. Carrie Jo McNally and Angela Cullins each had a double and a single to pace the Cougars. Ginger Dyer and Emily Guptil each had a double.

For the Patriots, Sarah Rockwell had a single and a home run.

Mattanawcook 13, Lee Acad. 10

At Lee, the Lynx were able to capitalize on several Lee errors to pull out the victory.

Casey Lowell had an RBI double and Angie Brawn and Branielle House each had singles to pace the winners.

For Lee, Melissa Kraft had a single and Missy Raymond a double.

Penquis 3, Schenck 2

At East Millinocket, Kerri Russell tossed a five-hitter and Jill Horne drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the fifth to lead the Patriots to the win.

Russell struck out nine and walked only three on the way to the win. Horne, Russell and Erin Weston each had two singles to pace the winners.

Christana Lyons had a single and a double while Denise Gardner walked only one batter for Schenck.

PCHS 4, Dexter 3

At Guilford, Piscataquis scored three runs in the third en route to the win. Adam Brown led off with a single. Paul Regan had an RBI with a fielder’s choice followed by Kam Kimball’s RBI single. The other run was scored on a Tiger error.

For the Dexter Tigers, it was Mike Cooney with three hits and two RBIs.

Schenck 12, Penquis 3

At East Millinocket, the Wolverines knocked out twelve hits, and survived a seventh inning rally to put away Penquis.

Brooks Sturtevant and Erik Giberson each had a single, double and an RBI, and Chad Michaud had a single and double for Schenck.

For the Patriots, Jason Heal had two singles and an RBI.

Central 17, PVHS 13

At East Corinth, Central took an early lead in the first with four runs, and added another eight runs in the eighth to hold the victory over Penobscot Valley.

Jason Edwards was the leader with a three-run homer in the fifth and a single. Gerald Gibson had a single and a double, along with four RBIs. Pitcher Chris Horn had a single, a double and two RBIs for Central.

Pitcher Corey Clukey led the way for the Red Devils with a solo home run in the fourth and a single. Corey Fleming had two singles and three RBIs. Richard Lindsay had a single, double, and RBI.

Katahdin 13, Bgr. Christian 8

At Sherman Station, the undefeated Cougars continued their winning ways, leaping out to an early lead over the Patriots.

Josh Willett and Jake Dyer each had a two-run double in the midst of a five-run third inning. Nate Richardson also had two singles.

For Bangor Christian, Ryan Mick cranked out a double, single and drove in four runs while Gabe Perrow had three singles and an RBI. Mark Shaw had two singles and Chad Simmons had a double, single and two RBIs.
