Witches’ hitting leads to victories over Old Town

OLD TOWN – Brewer High School managed a sweep here at Victory Field complex Monday afternoon as the baseball team outslugged Old Town 13-8 and the unbeaten softball team downed the Indians 9-4.

In baseball action, the Witches scored early and often to get off to a good start in what could be the most crucial week of the season – for both teams.

The Witches battered Old Town pitching for 12 hits en route to their victory. They also made the Indians pay for four miscues in the field by scoring five unearned runs.

Brewer evened its record at 4-4 after the first of four scheduled games this week. Old Town, which dropped to 3-3, will play five games, including a doubleheader against Presque Isle Tuesday.

“I think it is a crucial week, but then they all are because our league is so even,” said Brewer coach Dennis Kiah, whose team will also meet point-worthy Presque Isle in a Saturday doubleheader. “With four losses, every week becomes more critical for us.”

The Witches wasted little time breaking into the scoring column as they scored three unearned runs on an Old Town fielding error in the first inning.

“I think out of the 13 runs, defensively, we could have done some things differently that maybe would have taken three or four of those runs away, if not more,” said Dave Paul, Old Town’s coach.

The Indians were able to shake off their poor start and make the Witches sweat a little as they rallied for four runs in the fifth to pull within two runs of Brewer at 10-8.

“I was pleased with the way we battled back,” said Paul. “But I think when they scored their 11th run to get a three-run cushion, that deflated us a bit.”

Dakota Therrien further deflated the Indians with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh to push Brewer’s lead back to five.

Junior lefthander Jason Hardy came on in the sixth with a runner in scoring position and struck out the side. Hardy struck out five of Old Town’s last six batters to earn the save.

Brewer shortstop Jared Seavey continued his torrid hitting pace with two doubles and a single in five trips. Brewer was also paced by Chris Roeder, who belted a two-run homer over the left field fence in the second inning.

Seavey also made onlookers forget about a first-inning error he made by robbing Old Town’s Aaron Sucy of a hit with a diving stab to the shortstop hole in the second.

Old Town left fielder Shane Graham atoned for his first-inning error by going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to left that ignited the fifth-inning rally.

Teammate Seth Gilman also ripped a two-run blast, this one to left center in the third inning.

“There was only one inning we didn’t score in and I think we stayed focused offensively all seven innings,” Kiah said.

In the softball game, Emily Sevigny and Heather Hogan were the offensive heroes for the Witches with two singles and three RBIs each as Brewer shook off an early deficit to come back and post the convincing win.

Old Town went up 2-0 in the first inning, but Brewer answered with three runs in the third and never looked back.

“We’ve had to come back in five of the eight games we’ve played,” said Brewer coach Kelly Cookson. “I think we realize now that every game we play, teams are gonna be after us.”

Jaime Ferris pitched a five-hitter, struck out one, and walked four to earn her seventh win.

Courtney Phillips singled twice and tripled for the Witches.

Jessica Eddy had a solid day at the plate for Old Town with a single, double, and triple.
