OLD TOWN – This was supposed to be a ho-hummer.
Friday afternoon’s schoolgirl softball game here between a Bangor team with one loss and an Old Town team with one win looked like a gimme for the Rams as they looked forward to a rematch with Brewer, the only team to beat them, next week.
But Bangor’s 5-2 nine-inning win over Old Town was anything but easy as Old Town played solid defense and gave the Rams a scare.
A few yards away, the Bangor baseball team registered a 17-3 thumping of Old Town. The Rams belted five home runs and outhit the Indians 17-4.
In the softball game, the 8-1 Rams were able to thwart 1-7 Old Town’s upset bid, thanks to a late, three-run rally and a dominant pitching performance by Bangor freshman pitcher Melanie Deyone.
“When we first got here, we probably weren’t as focused as we should have been,” said Julie Murray. “We went extra innings with them last time too, so we knew they were coming after us.”
Murray was Bangor’s offensive hero. The junior catcher went 3-for-5 with two RBIs – one came on a solo home run in the third inning and the other was the game-winner in the ninth.
As tough as Murray was on Old Town pitching, Deyone was equally hard on Old Town’s batters… And both got better as the game wore on.
After giving up two runs in the third inning, Deyone faced only two batters more than the minimum with four 1-2-3 innings. The freshman lefthander put the finishing touches on the victory by striking out the side in the ninth.
“She’s doing a great job for us. It gives us that 1-2 punch with (Becca) Kinney and Deyone,” said Lisa Richards, Bangor’s coach.
Old Town had all the right moves early on. After Murray’s homer gave Bangor a 1-0 lead, the Indians came right back in the bottom of the third.
After Old Town loaded the bases with no outs, designated hitter Jess Eddy singled to score Emerson. Then the weirdness began.
Amanda Priest hit a one-hop liner to Deyone and Deyone forced out Stone at home plate. After Murray tagged out Stone, she fired the ball to second and Bangor second baseman Angela Pooler tagged out Eddy, who strayed off the bag.
Nadeau scored during the unorthodox double play to give Old Town the lead. A forceout at third let Bangor escape further damage.
Bangor tied the game in the fifth as Murray reached on a fielder’s choice, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on an outfield error.
After the Rams loaded the bases in the ninth, Murray lined a one-out, 2-2 pitch down the third-base line for an RBI, Pooler then scored on a wild pitch, and Kinney hit a sacrifice fly to provide the final winning margin.
“It just came down to who could put some hits together,” said Richards.
In the baseball game, Josh Jamieson belted a solo homer in the fourth inning, a three-run homer in the fifth, and added a double to help lead unbeaten Bangor to its 10th win.
Matt Kinney also homered twice with a two-run shot in the first and a solo shot in the fourth. Mark McEwen hit a solo homer in the third, doubled, and singled. Mike Pelkey pitched a four-hitter.
Shawn Deshane hit an RBI double and Rob Smalley added an RBI single to lead Old Town.
