Brewer cruises past Bangor for 16th win

BANGOR – The Brewer Witches erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning en route to a 12-2 schoolgirl softball win over the Bangor Rams Wednesday.

Alicia Gilmore paced the eight-hit attack with three singles, and Denise Hewes singled twice.

Emily Ayer doubled home one run and also singled for Bangor.

Jonesport-Beals 6, Searsport 0

At Searsport, Kristi Carver fashioned a one-hit shutout to lead the Royalettes to win.

Carver struck out 11 and walked eight. Stacey Beal led the charge at the plate with two singles and three RBIs.

Sarah Leighton singled for Searsport’s only hit.

At Deer Isle, Betsy Lepper hit a solo homer and Barbara Haskell hit three singles to pace George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Jada Fontaine relieved starting pitcher Heidi Carroll in the first inning and finished the game with nine strikeouts.

For DI-S, Erica Carter doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

At Guilford, down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Piscataquis Community High rallied for three runs to win.

Jessica Cupero tied the game with a two-run single, and then Karen Birden scored her with a single to left field. Birden also doubled earlier in the game, while Holly Clukey hit two singles.

Megan Edgar pitched a five-hitter for Central of East Corinth, and Monica Cookson hit two singles.

At Mount Desert, Jamie Lewis helped the Trojans even their record with a two-run homer and a single.

Holly Smith led Ellsworth with two singles and Angela Doane doubled.

Sumner sweeps Stearns

At Bangor, Brooke Newenham scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning to give Sumner of East Sullivan a 10-9 victory over Stearns of Millinocket and a sweep of their doubleheader at the Union Street field.

The Tigers posted a 4-0 verdict against the Minutemen in the opener.

Joslyn Brenton led off the Sumner fifth with a triple and scored on a single by Newenham for the only run the Tigers needed. Kassandra Dunbar added an RBI single. Alison Stevens picked up the win by striking out nine while walking only three.

Jeanne Marquis and Robyn Cyr hit two singles each for the Minutemen.

In the nightcap, Dunbar rapped a double and single, Dara Glass had a double and two RBIs, and Cindy Carter had a double and RBI.

Marquis again led Stearns with three singles and an RBI, and Kamie Preble added two singles and an RBI.

At Searsport, the visiting Royals scored all of their runs with the aid of four home runs.

Elliot Peabody opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, Kevin Alley added a solo homer in the third, Ryan Libby hit a three-run homer in the fourth, and Mike Kenney posted a solo homer in the fourth.

Alley chalked up 14 strikeouts and three walks to earn the win.

George Tripp led the Vikings with a double and two singles.

At Guilford, Chris Horn hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to give the Red Devils from East Corinth the victory over the Pirates, who had rallied with seven runs in the sixth to tie the game.

Horn earlier had hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Sean Hussey added three singles and two RBIs. Gerald Gibson relieved Horn in the sixth inning and picked up the win with Marty Miller pitching the seventh to earn the save.

Todd Tufts topped the Pirates with a solo homer in the fourth and a single and two RBIs in the sixth, and Phil Regan added three singles and an RBI.

At Husson College in Bangor, Jeff Ridley pitched a six-hit shutout to lead the Camden-Rockport Windjammers to the win.

Joe Steenstra singled twice, Jonathan Taylor tripled, and John McDonald doubled for the ‘Jammers.

Jeremy Spencer and Jason Guptill each singled twice for the Crusaders.

Stearns sweeps Sumner

Stearns High of Millinocket swept a neutral-sites doubleheader from Sumner of East Sullivan, winning the first game 8-7 at Mansfield Complex in Bangor and the second 13-0 at Heddericg Field in Brewer.

In the opener, Jeremy Osborne’s two-out single in the top of the seventh scored Jeremy Munoz with the eventual winning run. Osborne went 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, two singles and three RBIs.

John Montgomery doubled twice for the Minutemen behind relief winner Jason Cyr.

Manny Olivas stroked two doubles and a single for the Tigers.

In the second game, Montgomery fired a three-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking two. Osborne whacked a two-run homer and a double to pace Stearns and Dave McLaughlin lashed a double and a single good for two RBIs.

Brian Johnson and Corey Streams each contributed a double and a single.

At Dexter, the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and rolled.

Freshman pitcher Kenny Walsh fired a seven-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the win for Dexter. Aaron Thompson, Josh Kimball and Gene Gunther each had two hits. Dennis Farnham and Mike Cooney both doubled in a run.

For Rockland, Chris Seavey stroked two doubles and Cam Brown knocked in two runs on two singles.

At Mount Desert, Aaron Brown’s two-run single staked Ellsworth to a 4-0 lead and the Eagles held on for the victory. Phil Hodgkins hit an RBI single in the fifth, and Ricky Niles singled twice.

Matt McFarland singled twice and doubled, and Pat Mosley singled twice for MDI.
