A new department store, NEWBERRY VALUE FOR LESS, will open in Presque Isle next month in the building previously occupied by the House of Fabrics on North Street.
The business, owned by McCrory Stores, will occupy 14,500 square feet. Though the number of employees is as yet uncertain, the work force will be drawn from the local community.
Newberry’s stores in Mars Hill, Caribou and Fort Kent are expected to remain open, local store clerks said.
McCrory stores operates about 550 stores in 36 states and the District of Columbia under a variety of trade names such as J.J. Newberry, G.C. Murphy, H.L. Green, T.G.& Y., McCrory, and Newberry Value for Less.

TREFOIL INC., a new computer solutions consulting business, has opened its doors in Orono. Located at 17 Oak St., across from the Methodist church, Trefoil offers assistance in marketing through computers as well as services with digital cameras and image manipulations. The company’s president is George Markowsky who is also a professor of computer science at the University of Maine. With his new company, Markowsky said he has gathered a unique group of talented people to offer computer solutions to problems in science, business and humanities.
