PORTLAND – Billy McMillon and Lou Lucca drilled doubles in the sixth inning, keying a five-run rally that powered the Portland Sea Dogs past the Norwich Navigators 5-2 Tuesday in the Eastern League.
McMillon’s two-bagger to left led off the sixth and he scored the first run on Chris Sheff’s single. Sheff advanced on a flyball and scored on a pair of errors. Lucca’s third double of the game was the key hit as the Sea Dogs (42-19) combined a walk, double, sacrifice fly and a single for three more.
The Navigators (32-32) tallied a pair in the seventh, on Tate Seefried’s double, a walk and RBI singles by Robert Hinds and Ruben Rivera.
Portland starter Pat Leahy (3-1) gave up only two hits in six innings for the win and Jay Powell retired three in the ninth for his 12th save. Three Portland pitchers combined for a franchise-record 14 strikeouts. Norwich starter Ramiro Mendoza (0-3) took the loss.
