In reply to Rep. George Bunker Jr.’s letter (BDN, June 2) on his opposition to the Republicans’ plan to cut taxes, I would like to offer this response. It is true that Maine Republicans would like to lower the sales tax from 6 to 5 percent. It is true that we would like to do away with the snack tax.

Bunker wants us to help people. It has long been our viewpoint that returning people’s money to them, especially in such an equitable format as lowering sales taxes, helps families.

It is curious that Bunker supports the governor’s proposed budget. For years and years the Legislature has been controlled by a Democratic majority and yet he claims the House must be put in order. Who got it that way? Governor King’s budget includes $223 million in new spending. And there’s no room to cut taxes? I don’t think the people of Maine see it that way. Rep. James D. Layton R-Cherryfield
