STANDISH – The Winslow Black Raiders picked up their second state Class B baseball championship in three years with a 5-3 victory over Greely, and the Windham girls posted a 9-0 victory over Winslow for the Class B softball title at St. Joseph’s College Saturday.

The Black Raiders road the arm of Greg Dunbar who picked up his eighth win this season. Dunbar scattered eight hits for Winslow which finished 15-5.

Winslow did most of its damage early with a three-run second inning. Kyle Gunzinger led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a single by Seth Carter. Joel Fernald then beat out a bunt to load the bases.

Mark Gunning drove in Gunsinger with a hard single off the Greely second baseman. After a ground-out plated Cater, Fernald scored on a passed ball.

Greely answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Winslow put the close game away with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. After another Gunning single, pinch runner Donny Cauture promptly stole second.

A Chris Huston shot to left field brought Cauture around. A close play at the plate was avoided when the left fielder’s throw took an unusual bounce over the catcher’s head allowing Cauture to score.

Greely finished the season 18-2.

In the softball game, Whitney Swan pitched a four-hitter on her way to the Windham victory. The Eagles garnered some revenge as Winslow defeated Windham for the state championship two years ago.

Swan also helped break open a 1-0 game in the second when she hit a deep fly ball to right that got over the head of the right fielder. The runner that was on first scored and Swan ended up on third. The two runs were all the cushion that Swan needed.

The Eagles padded their lead on a two-run single by Kim Taylor in the fourth and added four more in the fifth, two on a single by Lauren Abrams and a run-scoring triple by Payson Swan.

Windham finished the season with an unblemished 21-0 record. Winslow ended 19-2.
