Television comes to Speedway 95 Sunday afternoon when WABI-TV of Bangor will broadcast the Carquest Late Model Sportsman 100.
Racing at the Hermon track begins at 2 p.m. and TV coverage starts at 4 p.m.
“We were just talking about it one day. I came up with the idea and kicked it around with one of the racers that I knew,” Steve Hiltz, programming director at WABI-TV.
“We’re excited about it. I don’t think it’s (live local stock car racing) ever been broadcast in this market at all.”
Using five cameras for its one-hour coverage, WABI will be charging into new territory.
“Technically, it’s not going to be the easiest thing we’ve ever done,” Hiltz said. “We need a microwave relay link to link the cameras on both sides of the track. We’ll have live pit reports.”

WABI is pre-empting its coverage of the NASCAR race to show the local Late Model Sportsman event. The NASCAR race, a late addition to the CBS lineup, will be shown Sunday night at 11:30 p.m.
Fireworks will accompany the racing at Speedway 95 Saturday night, weather permitting. Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. and features all divisions.
Elsewhere, the bomber cars will take over the track in the last race of the night at Spud Speedway in Caribou Friday night.
“They’re just junk cars,” explained John Albert, the track’s general manager. “We run ’em 50 laps one way, and then we turn ’em around and they do 50 laps the other way.”
“It’s the beginners, it’s the guy whose always wanted to race,” he continued. “They just take the glass out of the cars and they race.”
Racing will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature five racing divisions before the Bomber 100, which carries a $200 winning purse.
The American Canadian Tour will roar at Unity Raceway Saturday night, with another opportunity to qualify for the True Value Oxford 250 on July 17.
The 100-lap Late Model Pro-Stock race will be the featured race with five other racing divisions Saturday.
Racing at Wiscasset Raceway will feature the Coca-Cola 150 for the Late Model Sportsman division Friday night.
