Montgomery, Young help OT-Orono gain sweep

TRENTON – The Old Town-Orono Twins used timely hitting from John Montgomery and solid pitching from Corey Young to sweep an American Legion doubleheader from the Trenton Acadians 9-4 and 13-2 on Saturday.

In game one, Chris Bagley scattered eight Acadian hits on his way to the victory. Montgomery and Andy Trice each had two-run doubles that sparked the Twins attack.

For Trenton, Pat Mosley rapped three singles and drove in one run.

Game two saw Young strike out seven batters and give up just three hits on his way to the complete-game victory. Brian Goody had two doubles and one RBI, Jared Foster had two singles and two RBIs and Montgomery lashed out two singles for the winners.

Matt McDonald singled, scored a run and drove in a run for the Acadians.

Bangor 6-10, Skowhegan 1-3

At Bangor, the host Comrades used solid pitching and aggressive baserunning to sweep a weekend doubleheader against the Skowhegan Log Driver In the first game, Matt Kinney notched the win with a one-run, five-inning effort. Andy Robichaud hit a double and a single, and Mark McEwen went 2-for-3.

For Skowhegan, Chris Morris doubled and Tony Robinson singled him home in the first.

In the second game, McEwen singled twice and stole six bases to help pace the running Rams to the victory. T.J. True had two singles, three steals, and two RBIs. Scott Shaw had two singles.

Morris doubled and Robinson had two singles for the Log Drivers.

At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, five Marlin pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and only gave up two hits to post the shutout in Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League action Sunday.

Ken Reed led the attack with a single, two triples and three RBIs. Rex Turner singled and tripled, while Adam Fitzpatrick had two singles and Ron Mayo ripped a triple for the Marlins.

Ryan Dearborn singled twice for the Yankees.

At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, the Double O’s banged out 10 hits, three of them by Sean Sullivan, to pick up their fifth straight victory of the season.

Sullivan had a double, two singles, two RBIs and scored two runs for the winners. Tony Fernandez and Jason Tardy each had two singles and Nate Stubbard had a two-run single. Gary Sibley got the victory, striking out seven in four innings.

Marc Halsted and Troy Varney each doubled for the Canines.

At Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Brent Brown pitched six innings of one-hit ball as Molunkus shut out Downeast.

Brown struck out five and did not walk a batter before giving way to Rick Wickett, who pitched a scoreless seventh. Don Sparkman rapped a run-scoring double and Wally Sabine hit an RBI single, both in the third inning, for the Travelers.

Aaron Nauman singled twice for the Yankees to back loser Greg Marancik, who pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks.
