BANGOR – Three triples and two three-run innings helped the Bangor Comrades stay undefeated in American Legion Zone 1 baseball competition this season.
Bangor spotted the Old Town-Orono Twins a 2-0 lead before rallying for a 7-2 win at Mansfield Complex Thursday night.
The Twins, now 4-2 on the season, took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Andy Trice belted an RBI double down the left field line in the first and Bryan Goody singled home Chris Bagley after Bagley doubled in the fourth.
Bagley had pitched himself out of an early jam and appeared to be cruising through the Bangor lineup.
Bangor loaded the bases with two outs in the first, but Bagley struck out Andy Robichaud to end the threat. The Twins’ righthander set down the side in order in the second and third.
Then came the fourth, and Bangor’s first of three big triples.
After the Comrades loaded the bases with two outs, No. 9 hitter Tom Waterman stepped to the plate. Waterman, who committed a throwing error in the first, atoned for the miscue by ripping Bagley’s first pitch to deep left-center. Waterman drove in all three runners and slid safely into third ahead of the tag for a triple.
Waterman, who also batted ninth for state champion Bangor High School, is making a case for moving up in the order.
“I’m not really sure what I have to do,” said Waterman, when asked about moving up. “I don’t really care as long as we win. There’s a lot of other good players on this team that aren’t even playing.”
“We have a lot of talent, and the biggest chore we’ve had is to get all these kids in,” said Steve Vanidestine, Bangor’s coach. “These are wonderful kids. They’re very happy to be here. They said, `Coach, don’t worry about it. When you put us in, we’ll play.’ ”
In the fifth, it was Josh Pressley’s turn to get a three-bagger, but he got some help from the Mansfield lights.
With two on and one out, Pressley laced a 2-1 fastball to straightaway center. Twins center fielder Robey Rhoads lost the ball in the lights and immediately began running toward right field. The ball landed about 20 yards to his right and Pressley reached third standing. He later scored on a wild pitch.
Josh Jamieson added an insurance run for the Comrades in the sixth after Mark McEwen reached first on a two-out grounder through the left side. Jamieson jumped all over a 1-0 fastball, ripped it to right, and cruised into third base easily.
Pressley earned the win and McEwen was the Comrades’ only multiple hitter, getting two singles.
Montgomery added a single to lead the Twins’ offense.
