Relyea keys Waldo to decisive victory; Bangor teams win

Ben Relyea had a big day at the plate, belting a grand slam, triple and single good for six RBIs while leading Waldo to a 11-2 win over Camden in District 2 Little League action Monday afternoon. In the only other District 2 game, Knox Suburban eliminated Waldoboro 2-0 behind Shawn Brewer’s no-hitter.

In District 3 action, Bangor West beat up on Bucksport 17-0 and Bangor East eliminated Coastal 13-2, setting up today’s Bangor West-Bangor East showdown. Elsewhere, Machias knocked out Sunrise 18-4, Calais stayed unbeaten by downing Eastport 18-5, and Millinocket stayed alive by eliminating Katahdin 17-12 in seven innings.

Machias will now play Eastport on Wednesday, and Calais will await the winner of that game. Millinocket will play host to Border on Wednesday.

Calais 18, Eastport 5

At Calais, the hosts went ahead for good in the bottom of the second with a pair of bases-loaded walks, then broke the game open with a five-run third.

Winning pitcher Dan Reed sparked Calais by striking out 12 and walking only four, and added two singles and an RBI. Marlon Lutz added a double, single, and three RBIs, and Chris Leavitt also had two singles and an RBI.

Cliff Urquhart topped Eastport with two singles and an RBI, and Albert Wallace added a double.

Bangor East 13, Coastal 2

At Bangor, Jason Thomas fashioned a three-hitter to lead Bangor East to the win, which knocked Coastal out of the tournament.

Corey Gildart paced Bangor East with a double, single, and three RBIs. Evan Wade and Ryan Worcester each added a double, while Joe Campbell socked atriple. Thomas struck out seven and walked three.

Simeon Allen led Coastal with a double.

Bangor West 17, Bucksport 0

At Bucksport, Charlie Makris slugged two homers, doubled, and singled while driving in four runs to carry Bangor West over Bucksport.

Derek Watson drilled a triple and double for the victors, while Eben Sypitkowski doubled and singled. Kevin Proctor added a pair of singles.

For Bucksport, which was eliminated, Keith Nason hit a triple.

Machias 18, Sunrise 4

At Harrington, Barrett Craven belted a pair of home runs and a triple, knocking in three runs to lead Machias to the win.

Vinnie Emery singled three times for the winners and Derrick Jordan stroked a pair of doubles.

Machias, now eliminated, was led by Cliff Chase’s two doubles and Jason Snider’s two singles.

Knox Suburban 2, Waldoboro 0

At Waldoboro, Shawn Brewer threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead Knox Suburban past Waldoboro, which was eliminated.

Jeremy Curtis paced Knox Suburban with two singles and two RBIs. Abe Dugal added a triple.

Waldo 11, Camden 2

At Brooks, Ben Relyea cranked a grand slam, triple and single good for six RBIs to power Waldo to victory.Tucker Mercier backed winning pitcher Jim Huren (five-hitter) and Relyea with a double, single and two RBIs. Pasco Grove stroked a double.

With the loss, Camden was eliminated.

Millinocket 17, Katahdin 12

At Millinocket, Steve Rolfe went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles, T.J. Dickinson had two doubles and a single, and Josh Darling singled twice and drove in three runs as Millinocket rallied from an 11-1 deficit to eliminate Katahdin.

Jason Cummings pitched 4 1/3 innings of two-hit, two-run ball for the win.

Brandon McCarthy had two singles for Katahdin, and Chris Robinson had a three-run homer.
