White gets marching orders from Generals

JACKSON, Miss. – Brewer native Chad White moved one step closer to the major leagues last Friday when he was promoted to the Houston Astros’ Double A affiliate, the Jackson Generals of the Texas League.

White, a former standout for the University of Maine, played in the Generals’ Friday and Saturday games and had two hits in six at-bats.

White was playing for the Astros’ Single A team, the Quad City River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa, where he was batting .244 in 75 games. The switch-hitting White batted mostly from the left side and totaled 36 runs, 59 hits, 14 doubles, 18 RBIs and 12 stolen bases for the River Bandits.

He was the starting center fielder for the River Bandits and is also playing center for the Generals.

White was drafted in the late rounds by the Astros in 1993 after playing for UMaine for four seasons. He set the UMaine record for most stolen bases in a season with 35 in ’93 when he was also named the North Atlantic Conference player of the year.
