SAD 48 to discuss budget

NEWPORT — Administrators in SAD 48 will present a $10 million budget package for 1995-96 to district voters at an informational meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport. The meeting will be held in the cafetorium.

The budget package is slated to go to the voters in the six towns of the district in a referendum scheduled for Monday, Aug. 7. Voters in the six towns also will vote on a bond issue to fund $250,000 for major repairs in the district. Among the items on the list are the gymnasium roof and classroom roof at the Hartland Consolidated School.

An engineers’ report indicated the Hartland roof could not sustain any significant snow load without major structural repairs. The problem was made a priority on the maintenance list.

The budget includes a 2-percent increase from last year’s budget of $9.8 million. To achieve moderate growth in the budget, the district eliminated six elementary teaching positions, including a gifted and talented coordinator. The reduction was possible because of a reduction in elementary enrollment. The reduction did not result in job loss as teachers were reassigned to new positions and vacancies. Two teaching positions were added at Nokomis to accommodate increased enrollment.

Employee benefits increased as well as special education costs. The change in special education is a shift in programs to maintain more students within the district, rather than transporting them to out-of-district programs.
