ORONO – For the third time in five years, the Molunkus Travelers captured the Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League championship with a 10-3 victory over Mid-Maine Wednesday night at Mahaney Diamond.
The Travelers can thank the University of Maine baseball program for this year’s crown.
Winning pitcher Leroy Decker, along with hitting stars Steve and Ron Coombs, were all UMaine team members this past spring.
Decker scattered eight hits with no walks while striking out eight to earn his third win of the year. He also helped his cause with an RBI double. The Coombs brothers combined for six of the Travelers’ 10 hits.
Ron Coombs got four hits with a solo homer, a triple and two singles. He also scored three runs. Steve Coombs singled, doubled and drove in two runs.
The biggest hit in the game may have come from Aaron Knowles, whose three-run double sparked a four-run fourth inning for Molunkus. Knowle’s knock gave the Travelers a 8-1 lead.
The Marlins couldn’t get any closer than 9-3, after they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. All three of their runs were unearned.
Ken Reed paced Mid-Maine with a triple and single.
