Senate panel approves bill expanding federal role in regulating Indian casinos

WASHINGTON — Legislation to boost the federal government’s role in regulating Indian casinos won approval Wednesday from a Senate committee. But neither the tribes nor the nation’s governors were satisfied.

Tribes were solidly behind the original version of the bill, which was designed to resolve gambling disputes that have arisen between states and tribes.

That bill would have allowed tribes to appeal directly to the U.S. Interior Department if they could not reach agreement with states on gambling compacts within 120 days.
