Bikers attack Sugarloaf trail

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – The Widowmaker Challenge Mountain Bike Competition has returned to Sugarloaf Mountain this weekend with more than 1,000 competitors vying for cross-country, downhill and slalom championships.

Peter Webber Jr., a Carrabassett Valley native, will make a homecoming appearance when he races the Gary Fisher Cross Country Circuit over several Sugarloaf trails Sunday.

Webber, who races professionally for the Fisher team, tours on the National Off Road Biking Association’s national tour.

Races will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the Cannondale Downhill Challenge. Pro-expert and elite division men and women will race over Sugarloaf’s expert terrain at speeds reaching 55 mph.

The Saab Dual Slalom will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday with racers running both sides of the course. The fastest combined times will win the beginner and sport classes. Qualifying runs will be the rule in the pro, elite and expert classes, followed by the dual elimination run for each class.
