IGA honors market owner in Jackman

JACKMAN — IGA of Chicago has named Charles P. O’Brien, owner of Mountain Country Supermarket, its 1995 International Meat Merchandiser of the Year.

O’Brien and his wife, Becky, both owners of the market, will receive a trip to Panama City Beach, Fla., in mid-October and IGA’s Crystal Globe trophy.

O’Brien was named as the result of an international competition in which IGA awards the title to the one IGA store, worldwide, that exemplifies excellence in meat merchandising throughout the year, IGA said. The award is the greatest recognition accorded by IGA for meat marketing and includes all U.S. stores and those in 14 other countries.

Mountain Country Supermarket is a small market in the western mountains of Maine, serving 1,200 people and supplied by Supervalu Inc. of Portland. In 1985 and 1994 the market was named the national winner of the IGA and Supervalu Beef Round-Up and Stampede contests through efforts of meat department managers Alan DuPlessis and Ted O’Brien.
