Brooks, Genco spark Orono

ORONO – Freshman goalie Jen Brooks made a big splash in her debut, saving 21 of 25 shots, including a penalty stroke attempt to give the Red Riots a 3-2 overtime opening day win.

Angie Genco had an overtime penalty stroke goal and assist, and Heather Dekanich and Tyra Gettleman each added a goal for 1-0 Orono.

For 0-1 PCHS, Jamie Durant scored twice, including the tying goal with 3:56 left in the second half on a penalty stroke. Jen Moore made eight saves on 12 shots.

Brewer 2, Foxcroft 1 (OT)

At Brewer, Stefanie Kunz scored on a breakaway off an Alison Lorenz pass two and a half minutes into the sudden death overtime to give Brewer the win.

Kylie Kimball gave Foxcroft a 1-0 lead three and half minutes into the first half but Alicia Gilmore equalized off a Danielle Pelletier pass late in the first half.

Tricia Boone made 10 saves on 14 shots for Brewer while Foxcroft goalie Hillary Steinke rejected seven of 12 shots.

Central 0, Stearns 0 (OT)

At East Corinth, neither team managed to score a goal, settling for a tie in their season openers.

Central goalie Monica Cookson made four saves on four shots while her Stearns of Millinocket counterpart Holly Arsenault stopped three of six shots.

Nokomis 2, Hermon 1

At Newport, Sara Davis snapped a 1-1 tie with her second goal of the game 21:09 into the second half on a Kelly Deering assist for the Warrior win.

Davis scored her first goal unassisted just one minute into the game. Goalies Jillian Oliver and Jen Crudell combined to stop nine of 10 shots for 1-0 Nokomis.

For Hermon, now 0-1, Colleen Baker tied the game up with a goal 14:36 into the first half. Amy Reynolds made five saves on 12 shots.

JV: Nokomis 2, Hermon 1

Old Town 6, Bangor 0

At Bangor, Lisa Stewart recorded a hat trick and an assist for the Indians’ first win.

Kelly Emerson added a goal and two assists, Trisha Adams had a goal and an assist, and Mitzi Clark scored once for 1-0 Old Town. Christy Danielson made five saves on eight shots.

For 0-1 Bangor, Julie Malmstrom made four saves on 10 shots.

JV: Old Town 4, Bangor 1

Hampden 8, John Bapst 0

At Hampden, Kaili Temple scored three goals and dished out three assists for the Broncos’ win.

Carolyn Roderick added two goals, and Kristina Olson and Kristin King both scored one goal for 1-0 Hampden. Jess Sturdee had two assists and Olivia Fitzpatrick had one. Amy Hafford saved the only shot she faced.

For 0-1 John Bapst, Edythe Dyer made nine saves on 18 shots.

Mt. Blue 5, Mt. Ararat 0

At Farmington, Christie Beaulieu notched a hat trick to carry the Cougars to the win in each team’s season opener.

Kelly McFarland and Carrie Black each added a goal for the winners. Mandi Mattson was in goal for Mt. Blue.

For Mt. Ararat, Erika Stale made 11 saves on 27 shots in the goal.

Mattanawcook 3, Dexter 2

At Lincoln, Angie Hainer scored from Mandi McLaughlin with 1:57 left in regulation to give the Lynx their first victory of the season.

Mandi McLaughlin and Laura LaValee also added goals for Mattanawcook. Goalie Angie Braun made 6 saves on 9 shots.

For Dexter, Melissa Warren scored both goals. Christina Dorman saved 9 of 10 shots. Dexter drops to 0-1.
