FORT FAIRFIELD – A balanced attack powered Fort Fairfield to a 6-0 schoolboy soccer victory over Washburn here Wednesday. The shutout accounted for the Tigers’s fifth victory this season.
Jon Nichols and David Bernard each had a goal and an assist. Jason Cunningham, Donnie DeMerchant, Jeremy Ouellette and Josiah Leighton all contributed to the scoring.
Goalies Ian Hyslop and John Hayes combined for seven saves on 15 shots.
Nick Thompson stopped 15 of 26 shots for Washburn.
Katahdin 3, Hodgdon 1
At Hodgdon, the visiting Cougars received goals from Nick McNally, Jon Parker and Nate Richardson and two assists from Sam Shippee to upend Hodgdon.
McNally gave Katahdin a 1-0 lead with a header just 3:33 into the game. Parker made it 2-0 in the second half and, after Jeremy White scored for Hodgdon, Richardson added a late insurance goal.
Darren Stewart had an assist on White’s goal.
Scott Mann made three saves on nine shots for 3-0 Katahdin. Evan Clark made 21 saves on 34 shots for the 5-4 Hawks.
Girls soccer
Katahdin 3, Hodgdon 1
At Sherman Station, Jodie Dyer’s two goals and an assist, including the game winner, was all the host Cougars needed to stop the Hawks and win their season-opener.
Dyer also assisted on a goal by Tiffany Vance. Goalie Laura Ordway saved eight of 12 shots.
For 4-2-3 Hodgdon, Wendy Ivey scored the lone goal on an assist from Robyn Duff. Jodie Quint stopped 13 of the 19 shots she faced.
Sumner 1, George Stevens 0
At East Sullivan, Joslyn Brenton’s goal at 26:55 of the first half set up Sumner’s victory.
Brenton’s goal was assisted by Fawn Veno. Goalie Stacie Warren rejected 21 of 31 shots.
For the Eagles, Betsy Lepper stopped eight shots on nine attempts. George Stevens dropped to 0-2.
Penobscot Valley 2, Searsport 0
At Howland, Lana Sage had a goal and an assist to lead the Howlers to their first victory of the season.
Sage’s goal at 13:16 of the first half was assisted by Megan Hutchinson. Sage then set up Keri Magoon’s second half goal to round out the scoring. Goalie Jennie Neal stopped seven of eight Viking shots.
Sara Webster saved 17 of 20 for Searsport. The Vikings are 1-1.
Hermon 4, Bucksport 3
At Hermon, the Hawks built a 4-1 lead thanks to Liza Doughty’s two goals and then held off the rallying Bucks for the victory.
Kiera Dorr and Diane Rines scored the other goals for 2-0 Hermon with Jen Stewart picking up two assists. Katy Calligan and Jessie Frost had an assist apiece and goalies Pam Poland and Carol-Ann Hewes combined for 10 saves on 14 shots.
Katy Pelletier scored twice for 1-1 Bucksport and Karrie Hoke got the other. Hoke, Carrie Russell and Megan Smith had assists. Hoke and Kelly Downes combined for seven saves on 14 shots.
Mt. Desert Island 3, John Bapst 2
At Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor, Jamey Lewis scored her second goal of the game with 30 seconds remaining to give Mount Desert Island its win over John Bapst.
Shelagh Slack set up the game-winning goal.
Chaffee Emory scored the other goal for 1-0 MDI, and Anna Salvatore stopped seven of nine shots.
Lisa Groesenek and Ashley LeBlanc scored for 1-1 John Bapst, and Jessie Groesenek assisted on LeBlanc’s goal.
Katie Lawler and Racheal Dunton combined for 13 saves on 17 shots for John Bapst.
Field hockey
Nokomis 2, Brewer 1
At Newport, Sara Davis’ rebound off Brewer keeper Erin Tracey lifted the Warriors over the Witches in a hard-fought match. The game was decided after a 10-minute overtime and three pairs of corners.
Kelly Deering added the other goal for the Warriors as goalies Jillian Oliver and Jen Crudell secured the win by combining for 16 saves on 19 shots.
Alicia Gilmore scored the lone Brewer tally unassisted. Erin Tracey stopped four of 14 shots.
