AUGUSTA – The highest-scoring team in the Pine Tree Conference just kept on rolling Friday night – right over host Cony High School – as the Bangor Rams dropped the host Cony Rams 50-12.
Cony’s 12 points were the first Bangor has given up in three games.
Bangor improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the PTC. Cony drops to 1-4 (0-3 in PTC play).
Bangor Coach Gabby Price said he was proud of the way his Rams didn’t let themselves look past this game with a big clash against Waterville looming next week.
“I was worried. But they’re a mature bunch of kids,” Price said. “This was a tough week. We worked them extra hard this week.”
“We came off two great wins the last two weeks, but we didn’t want to overlook them (Cony),” said Bangor junior wide receiver Jason St. Pierre.
Bangor didn’t waste any time grabbing the momentum as quarterback Richie Day hit favorite target St. Pierre for a 68-yard touchdown strike on the game’s third play – only 1:37 into the first quarter.
“That was the icebreaker. Once we get going, there’s no stopping this offense,” said St. Pierre.
The Cony Rams would probably agree. Bangor put up 319 yards on Cony and scored one touchdown with one special teams.
Bangor’s defense wasn’t too shabby either. Although Cony managed 248 total yards – 113 from Cony tailback Oscar Gagnon – Bangor’s `D’ scored two touchdowns and a safety.
The safety occurred when a high snap sailed over Cony punter Donnie Bolduc’s head on fourth-and-16 from Cony’s 22. Bolduc fell on the ball in the end zone and was tackled by several Bangor defenders.
A seven-yard keeper up the left side by Day made it 16-0 Bangor with 11:10 to go in the second quarter.
Two quick scores within a minute of each other all but iced the game. With 9:54 before halftime, Cony QB Graham Dyer was intercepted by Day – playing defensive back – and Day returned the ball 26 yards to the Cony end zone.
Fifty-eight seconds later, Cony tailback Oscar Gagnon fumbled and Bangor senior defensive tackle Tim Wright – a first-year varsity football player – fell on the ball at Cony’s 23. Wright had two fumble recoveries on the night.
Second-string running back Mike Cooper ran down the right sideline and scored on the next play to make it 30-0 Bangor.
Cooper would also return another interception of Dyer 41 yards in the third quarter for a TD.
“I’ve never seen two interceptions returned for touchdowns in a high school game before,” said Price.
Price had never given his team the day off prior to game day before either, but decided to Thursday.
“They gave us an honest effort and we were getting a little banged up,” Price explained. “And I thought they were ready.”
Cony finally got on the board on a 35-yard TD pass from Dyer to Mike Dutil late in the second quarter. Gagnon added an 80-yard scoring run in the third.
