Jozokos’ run torpedoes Mariners

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Quarterback Deron Jozokos capped an 11-play, 57-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give Massachusetts Maritime Academy a 17-10 win over archrival Maine Maritime Academy Saturday.

In winning the Admiral’s Cup, Massachusetts Maritime improved its record to 3-0 while dropping Maine Maritime’s record to 1-2.

Jozokos completed 11-of-19 passes for 150 yards and Chris Simmons ran for 88 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown.

Simmons’ one-yard TD plunge and Boyd Hobson’s 36 yard field goal gave the Buccaneers a 9-0 halftime lead but the Mariners answered with Rob Marchitello’s six-yard TD run and Dan McQuilkan’s 21-yard field goal in the third period which gave them a 10-9 lead until Jozokos scored.

Marchitello gained 110 yards on 31 carries but the Mariners were held to 177 total yards by the Buccaneer defense.

Middlebury 41, Colby 24

At Middlebury, Vt., senior quarterback Scott Pokrywa completed 14-of-22 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns and he ran for another to help Middlebury supply Coach Mickey Heinecken with his 100th career victory.

Pokyrwa threw a 35-yard TD pass to Tadhg Campbell to open the scoring and a five-yard to Dave Frye to stake Middlebury to a 14-3 halftime lead.

Brad Gottfred’s 14-yard run made it 21-3 in the third quarter. Peter Matson’s 22-yard TD pass to Jerrod DeShaw and Don Gage’s one-yard TD run for the Mules sandwiched a 48-yard TD pass from Frye to Campbell to pull Colby within 28-17.

But Pokrywa’s five-yard TD strike to Frye and Pokrywa’s 10-yard scamper iced it.

Gottfred carried the ball 14 times for 97 yards and Pokrywa rushed 17 times for 90 yards. Matson completed 21 of 36 passes for 242 yards for Colby.

Both teams are 1-1.

Amherst 27, Bowdoin 20

At Amherst, Mass., Josh Mason ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, as Amherst prevailed.

Amherst is now 2-0 while Bowdoin fell to 0-2.

Mason, who carried the ball 25 times, scored on touchdown runs of 13, 2 and 7 yards.

Lord Jeffs quarterback Rich Willard completed 21 of 35 yards for 248 yards and a touchdown.

The Bowdoin defense produced two of the touchdowns as Mike Flaherty ran 65 yards with a fumble return and Tony Minella ran 38 yards with a blocked punt.

Dan Orlando ran for 107 yards on 14 carries for Amherst while Bowdoin was led by Tony Molinari’s 86 yards on 17 carries and Ramon Martinez’s 147 passing yards.

Tufts 40, Bates 21

At Lewiston, Damon Adams racked up 187 rushing yards on 37 carries and scored four touchdowns to pace Tufts to its second win in as many games and extend Bates’ losing streak to 33 games. Bates, 0-2, has now gone 35 games without a win.

Adams scored on runs of 5, 3, 2 and 2 yards.

Greg Peters completed 9-of-16 passes for 176 yards and a TD for the winners.

Tim Bettencourt rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries for the Bobcats and caught one of two TD passes throw by Chris Snow. Snow completed 11-of-31 passes for 190 yards and he was picked off three times.
