`Maine & Company’ helps sponsor King fund-raiser

AUGUSTA — Supporters from across the political spectrum are among the individual sponsors of a fund-raiser for independent Gov. Angus King, which is planned for Oct. 10 in Portland.

The list of sponsors is also liberally sprinkled with businesses and business people who formed a new, private, promotional organization called Maine & Company that King will head as honorary chairman.

Fund-raiser co-chairman Sam Zaitlin, in his role as chairman of the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, joined with King and others in the State House Cabinet Room on Sept. 19 to herald the new group, which is designed to aid state government in attracting new business investment to Maine.

Private-sector sponsors of the nonprofit organization include Key Bank and Fleet Bank, which are also corporate sponsors of the $150-a-head reception in Portland for King on Oct. 10.

The roster of individual fund-raiser sponsors is topped by former Gov. Kenneth Curtis, a law partner of King’s finance chairman, James Broder, and King’s counterpart as actual chairman of Maine & Company.

At last month’s announcement of Maine & Company’s formation, King and others touted the organization as an example of public and private partnerships capable of stirring economic activity.

While the group is to be privately funded, King told reporters that the line between its public and private functions was “not clear.”

Among the corporate sponsors are the Blue Alliance Mutual Insurance Co., Cellular One, Time Warner Cable of Maine, The Dunlap Corp., Georgia-Pacific Corp., UNUM Corp. and Sunday River Ski Resort.

Invitations to the King reception solicit contributions to the Angus King for Governor Committee.
