Test subjects needed for UM `blues’ study

ORONO — As summer fades and the days become shorter, many people become tired and get a case of the blues. There may be help on the way, but first researchers are doing a study of the disorder, and are seeking the help of Bangor area people.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, appropriately known as SAD, will be the topic of the two-month pilot study at the University of Maine. Sandra Sigmon, assistant professor of psychology, will conduct four to six study groups from mid-October to early December, testing two approaches.

Earlier studies have shown that as many as 30 percent of the population may experience SAD symptoms, but only 10 percent so strongly that they need help. Women are 10 times as susceptible as men.

Anti-depressant drugs may be prescribed in traditional treatments, but in the UMaine study, two psychological approaches will be tested, one based on changing attitudes and the other on increasing activity levels. Those interested in taking part as volunteers may call Sigmon at 581-2052.
