Higgins sparks Ellsworth to 2-1 victory

ELLSWORTH – Darby Higgins scored both goals while powering Ellsworth to a 2-1 schoolboy soccer victory over Mt. Desert Island here Thursday in the final regular season game for both teams.

Charlie DeLong added an assist for 8-2-4 Ellsworth. Matt McDonald made six saves on nine shots.

Alfred Doyle made three saves on six shots for 7-4-3 Mt. Desert Island.

Greenville 2, Lee 1

At Lee, Jeremy Philbrook scored off a feed from Matt Burgess with 29 minutes to play to snap a 1-1 tie and improve Greenville’s record to 9-2-1.

C.B. Grenier tied the score for Greenville with an unassisted goal in the first half, and Josh Glavine made 16 saves in net to secure the victory.

Justin Saucier scored Lee’s only goal unassisted, and Jon Cole made 30 stops in goal. Lee is 5-4-3.

Vinalhaven 3, Islesboro 1

At Islesboro, Wesley Chilles had two goals and an assist to lead 7-4-1 Vinalhaven to the victory.

Bruce Philip added a goal and two assists to the Vikings’ attack. Colby Oaks made five saves on 10 shots.

Abe Antonucci scored on a Josh Conover assist for 4-4 Islesboro. Scott Gallant made 10 saves on 19 shots.

George Stevens 4, Central 0

At East Corinth, Travis Vogel, Dave Merancik, Tim Pert and Christian Newman each scored goals as 11-1-1 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill grabbed the win.

Joe Kilch made five saves on six shots while Keith Marcinkus and Brock Mattson added assists.

Nick Parent and Rob Reynolds combined for 12 saves on 16 shots for 4-9 Central.

Cam-Rock 4, Mt. View 1

At Camden, Jim Butler played solid in goal and four Windjammers notched goals to pick up the win.

Brian Park, Max Leighton, Marc MacFarland and Thomas Weirowski scored the goals for 11-0-1 Camden-Rockport. Brian Ridley had two assists and Peter Madaffari had one while Butler made four saves on 12 shots.

Kevin Buttery scored the lone Mustangs goal on a penalty kick. Andrew Stevenson made 14 saves on 26 shots for 3-8-3 Mount View.

Girls soccer

DI-Stonington 3, J-B Royals 2

At Jonesport, Silvana Garcia’s hat trick led her Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners to the win over Jonesport-Beals.

For the 2-12 Mariners, Katie Baasch made 13 saves on 26 shots.

Tammy Alley scored both goals for the 2-6 Royals. Stacey Beal made 13 saves on 26 shots.

Penobscot Valley 2, Schenck 0

At Howland, Jessica Potter scored two goals and Carrie Braley stopped all the shots she faced as the 6-5-3 Howlers picked up the win.

Holly Rosebush made 23 saves on 31 shots for the 3-7-4 Schenck Wolverines from East Millinocket.

Cam-Rock 2, Mount View 1

At Thorndike, Nellie Peck’s goal off a K.J. Wadsworth assist completed Camden-Rockport’s comeback with 22:09 remaining in the game.

Mount View’s Kali Tomlin gave the 8-2-4 Mustangs a 1-0 lead on a pass from Andrea Cochrane with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Leslie Clifford made 10 saves on 14 shots.

Bethany Powell’s unassisted goal 8:40 into the second half tied the game for the 8-4-1 Windjammers. Darrah Roberts made seven saves on nine shots.

Searsport 3, Bangor Christian 1

At Searsport, Ellen Donaghy scored two goals to lead the 8-3-2 Vikings to the win.

Jen Shaver scored the third Searsport goal. Chandra Robert and Rebecca Klotzle each notched assists. Jessica Barton and Klotzle combined to make five saves on nine shots.

Heidi Niles scored for 4-10 Bangor Christian. Stephanie Regan made 10 saves on 15 shots for the Patriots.

Orono 0, MDI 0 (2OT)

At Mount Desert Island, Anna Salvatore of the 10-2-2 Trojans and Jessica Libby of the 13-0-1 Red Riots were unbeatable in the nets as the teams battled to a stalemate.

Salvatore made 10 saves on 15 shots and Libby made seven saves on 13 shots.

Brewer 2, Hampden 0

At Brewer, Leslie Trott and Casey Davis each scored goals to lead the 4-7-2 Witches to the win.

Jessica Chase had an assist and Heidi Everett made 11 saves on 21 shots.

Shillo Marden made seven saves on 13 shots for the 5-7-1 Broncos.

Field hockey

Brewer 5, Bangor 0

At Brewer, Alicia Gilmore scored two goals and added an assist to lift the Witches over the Rams.

Stefanie Kunz scored a first-half goal off a Tiffany Carlisle assist. Jaime Ferris then scored off an Alison Lorenz and Kunz double assist, the first of Kunz’s two assists.

In the second half, Lorenz scored off a Lyndsay Reif assist and Gilmore scored again, also off a Reif assist.

Trisha Boone and Kristy Kimball combined for two saves on two shots for 8-5-1 Brewer. Taryn McNichol and Julie Malmstrom combined for 15 saves on 24 shots for 1-13 Bangor.

Old Town 2, John Bapst 0

At Old Town, Denise Case scored both goals as the Indians improved to 11-1-2 on the final day of the regular season.

Goalie Christy Danielson made four saves on nine shots.

Edythe Dyer made four saves on 14 shots for the 6-6-2 Crusaders.

Foxcroft 1, Piscataquis 0

At Guilford, Kylie Kimball scored on a rebound off Piscataquis Community goalkeeper Jen Moore’s pads with 2:17 remaining in the first half to give the Ponies the win.

Hillary Steinke made seven saves on 12 shots for 9-4-1 Foxcroft.

Moore made eight shots on nine saves for host Piscataquis, 9-4-1.

Stearns 2, Hermon 1

At Millinocket, Carrie Reardon scored the game winner at 19:03 into the second half as the 3-9-2 Minutemen picked up the win.

Reardon also tallied the first goal for Stearns. Colleen Bur Reardon also tallied the first goal for Stearns. Colleen Burgess made five saves on 10 shots.

Jill Schacht tied the game 2:55 into the second half for the 0-14 Hawks. Erica Brewer made 14 saves on 18 shots.

Hampden 2, Nokomis 1 (OT)

At Newport, Olivia Fitzpatrick scored on a Kaili Temple assist in coners as 9-4-1 Hampden beat Nokomis.

Fitzpatrick’s goal came after Nokomis failed on their corner attempt. Temple scored the game’s first goal, and Amy Hafford made seven goals on 13 shots.

Hope Kurro scored on a Carrie Clark assist with 13:09 left to play to tie the contest. Jenn Crudell made 18 saves on 23 shots for 5-6-2 Nokomis.

Orono 2, Mattanawcook 0

At Lincoln, Tyra Gettleman and Heather Dekanich each scored unassisted goals to power Orono past Mattanawcook Academy.

Jen Brooks saved three of 10 shots for the shutout for 12-2 Orono.

Angie Brawn made six saves on 14 shots for the 5-5-4 Lynx.

Rockland 2, MCI 1 (OT)

At Pittsfield, Natalie Dyer’s goal on an Anne Dowling assist in overtime penalty corners won for Rockland.

Nikki Raye tied things up for the 3-10 Tigers with her goal with 17:39 left in the first half on an Erin Stevens assist. Greta Gundel made nine saves on 11 shots.

Kate Morancie drew first blood for 4-8 Maine Central Institute at 4:34 into the first half. Casey Murray made five saves on nine shots.
