Lee logger places fifth in nationals

NELSONVILLE, OHIO — Mike Thurlow, a self-employed logger from Lee, finished fifth in the National Game of Logging Competition held at Hocking Technical College Oct. 7-8.

Before competing in the nationals, Thurlow won the Maine Game of Logging championship last August in Greenville. He beat another dozen loggers to garner a $1,000 cash prize.

The National Game of Logging Competition, which is attracting growing participation and attention, is held annually to promote skill and safety among loggers. They are judged on such skills as:

Preplanning their cuts;

Their cutting ability;

Chainsaw maintenance;

Bucking and felling techniques;

Safe operation.

Events at both the state and national levels included competition in felling, bore-cutting, timed cutting, and saw-chain filing and carburetor adjustment.

At the national competition, Thurlow was in second place until the final event. In the tree-felling competition, he hit his target, but the shape of the tree caused it to roll, and that cost him points. Thurlow earned a $100 prize for hitting his target, but his fifth-place finish kept him out of the money. For appearing at the National Game of Logging, Thurlow received a new Husqvarna chainsaw and a full complement of safety gear.
