GUILFORD – Jaime Durant scored the game’s only goal on a penalty stroke with 19:25 to play as No. 3 Piscataquis defeated No. 6 Central of East Corinth 1-0 in an Eastern Maine Class C field hockey quarterfinal.
Piscataquis will host No. 7 Dexter in Wednesday’s semifinal round.
In other quarterfinal action, No. 2 Gardiner posted 3-0 Class A victory over Lawrence. No. 3 Mt. Blue survived two late goals to defeat No. 6 Brunswick 3-2. Mt. Blue will travel to Gardiner for the semifinal match.
Class B’s No. 2 Messalonskee Eagles got a scare from No. 7 Lincoln Academy but prevailed 3-2 on penalty corners. No. 3 Winslow downed No. 6 Camden-Rockport 2-1 in two overtimes to advance. Messalonskee will host Winslow next Wednesday.
In Class C, No. 7 Dexter upset No. 2 Orono 2-1 and No. 3 Piscataquis blanked No. 6 Central of East Corinth 1-0.
Class A
Mt. Blue 3, Brunswick 2
At Farmington, the No. 3 Mt. Blue Cougars built a 3-0 lead early and then hung on to eliminate No. 6 Brunswick.
The 10-4-1 Cougars got first-half goals from Carrie Black and Kelly McFarlane to take a 2-0 lead at the half. Christie Beaulieu scored midway into the second half for the Cougars final goal. Nicole Moore, Tristy Riggs and McFarlane notched assists. Mandi Mattson made three saves on eight shots.
Melissa Kelley and Jen Reed both scored second-half goals. Renee Heath assisted on Kelley’s goal. Christa Metivier made eight saves on 14 shots.
Mt. Blue advances to meet No. 2 Gardiner, while Brunswick ends the season 7-8.
Gardiner 3, Lawrence 0
At Gardiner, the No. 2 Tigers scored three second-half goals to defeat No. 7 Lawrence of Fairfield.
Jody Mertzel, Katie Spurling and Kristen Lee each scored for 12-3 Gardiner. Kelli Mason assisted on Lee’s goal. Elissa Roberts stopped all seven shots she faced for the win.
Becky Hawes made nine saves on 22 shots for the Bulldogs.
Gardiner advances to face No. 3 Mt. Blue and Lawrence ends the season 7-8.
Class B
Messalonskee 3, Lincoln 2 (2OT)
At Oakland, Meg Provandie scored her second goal of the game on the seventh overtime penalty corner to give No. 2 Messalonskee a hard-fought win over Lincoln Academy.
The 13-1-1 Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on first-half goals by Provandie and Catherine Henrick. Kathryn Mathias assisted on Provandie’s goal and Aleisha Bemis assisted on Henrick’s goal.
The seventh-ranked Lincoln Academy Eagles of Newcastle came back with Sarah Dauala scoring with 12 minutes left in the first half. Mackenzie Keliher sent the game to overtime with an unassisted goal with only three minutes left.
Joy Duguay of Messalonskee made eight saves on 10 shots to set up a meeting with No. 3 Winslow.
Jenny Doe made 18 saves on 20 shots as Lincoln Academy finished the season 11-4.
Class C
PCHS 1, Central 0
Durant got her chance when a Piscataquis penalty corner was deflected off a Central player’s leg and out of the goal.
Jen Moore preserved the shutout with two saves. Piscataquis takes a 10-4-1 record into next Wednesday’s semifinal with Dexter.
Monica Cookson stopped 11 of 17 shots for Central which finished 2-10-3.
