SKOWHEGAN — The 1995 Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the Year is Leon Levellie of Skowhegan, named by the Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation District. Levellie will receive an award at the annual banquet Nov. 3 at the Canaan Grange.

Levellie’s farm is a 225-acre Holstein dairy on Currier Hill that includes 23 acres of corn and hay planted in contour strips.

Levellie has built a manure waste storage building, done contour strip cropping and used winter cover on his corn strips to reduce erosion. He also took part in the district Manure Management Program in 1986.
