NEWARK, Del. – Chris Ahern’s second career goal turned out to be a winner for the University of Maine in a 4-1 men’s soccer victory against North Atlantic Conference rival Delaware here Friday afternoon.
Ahern’s goal with 2:54 left in the first half followed the 9-3-1 Black Bears’ first goal by Paul Kelly, who converted on a penalty kick at 9:06. Kelly added a second goal on an indirect free kick 1:15 into the second half, on an assist from Seth Mulrooney.
Andy Guastaferro iced the game with his first career goal with 18:25 to play. Nathan Benoit made two saves on eight shots for Maine, which is 4-0-1 in NAC play.
For 4-9-2 Delaware, Brian Phillips tied the game at 1-1 with his goal on a Jeff Davidson assist at 39:41 into the first half. Joaquin Hurtado made one save on eight shots for the Blue Hens, who fall to 0-5-2 in NAC play.
UM-Machias 6, UM-Fort Kent 1
At Machias, Sumeet Kanwal led the offensive explosion with two goals and an assist for UMaine-Machias.
Matthew Williams had a goal and two assists, and Jonathan Svor added a goal and an assist for the 4-9-1 Clippers. John Evers and Patrick Lewis each scored a goal. Lewis and Scott Douglas split time in goal, combining for four saves on 10 shots.
For 7-7 UM-Fort Kent, Randy MacLean converted a Massayoshi Makina pass into a score. Melik Khoury made six saves on 29 shots.
St. Joe’s 3, MMA 1
At Castine, Matt Stratton scored a goal in each half to pace the Monks’ victory.
Mike Foye added another goal for St. Joe’s of Standish and Shawn Beauregard made 13 saves on 15 shots.
Julias Walker scored a goal for Maine Maritime Academy while Mark Thibodeau recorded five saves on eight shots.
Women’s soccer
UMPI 2, UM-Farmington 1
At Farmington, Shelly Richardson’s goal at 7:58 into the first half on a Renae Madore assist gave UMaine-Presque Isle a lead they would not relinquish.
Sarah Roy added an insurance goal at 19:12 into the first half on a Marcie Burr assist for the 8-2-1 Owls. Keli Daigle made 14 saves on 22 shots.
Amy Fletcher cut the deficit to one with her goal at 22:07 into the first half on an assist from Bethanie Boccelli for 5-8 UM-Farmington. Lynette Waugh made 15 saves on 22 shots.
St. Joseph’s 5, Thomas 0
At Standish, five different players contributed a goal apiece for St. Joseph’s to help the Monks improve to 7-7-1 overall.
Cindy Kamszik, Katye Mattson and Erin Nightingale each scored to give St. Joseph’s a 3-0 lead at halftime. Kendra Mattson and Heather Pelletier added goals in the second half.
Carrie DeFrino and Bridget Maguire combined for eight saves for the Monks, now 5-2 in the Maine Athletic Conference.
Tee Fecteau made 14 saves for the 1-10 Terriers who fall to 0-8 in MAC play.
Field hockey
Springfield 2, Colby 0
At Springfield, Mass., Suzy Gragnano scored a goal and assisted on another to pace Springfield.
Gragnano scored at 24:56 into the first half. That was enough as winning goalie Carla Partlow stopped all five shots she faced. Gragnano and Suzy Pohorylo assisted on Whitney Smith’s insurance goal in the second half. The Pride improved to 8-8-1.
Rachel Simson made four saves for the Colby Mules of Waterville, now 4-8.
