ORONO – Holding a 22-7 lead with only 40 seconds left in the first half, the Orono High School Red Riots appeared en route to their sixth win in eight games. The Winslow High School Black Raiders hadn’t moved the ball effectively and they had it at their own 16-yard line.

But the Riots discovered the hard way that you can’t underestimate the tandem of junior quarterback Ruben Lemelin and junior split end Joel Fernald as they hooked up on a 32-yard touchdown pass to close out the half and each scored in the fourth quarter to rally Winslow to a 27-22 triumph.

Lemelin scampered 42 yards on an option play around the right end for a touchdown with 9:04 remaining and hit Fernald with a 47-yard TD pass with 1:09 remaining as Winslow improved its record to 6-2.

The winning touchdown came on a third-and-12 play and was made possible when Orono’s Robey Rhoads slipped on the soft turf.

“I was running a deep corner pattern and when he slipped, I just kept going,” said Fernald. “The grass was getting slippery.”

“When the guy fell down, I told myself just to throw it where Joel can catch it,” said Lemelin.

The game wasn’t over, however, as speedster Erik Poulsen returned the ensuing kickoff 39 yards to the Winslow 43-yard line.

“I needed just one more block,” said Poulsen.

Rhoads hit Poulsen with a 23-yard pass to the Winslow 20 but tried to hook up with him again and got picked off by Fernald.

In that series, which pulled Winslow within 22-13 at the half, the Black Raiders pulled a trick play on which Lemelin tossed an overhand lateral to Fernald and Fernald threw to a wide open Issac Whitaker for a 46-yard gain.

Two plays later, Fernald ran a fade to the far corner and Lemelin lofted a strike to him in the right corner of the end zone.

Orono appeared ready to rebuild the lead to two touchdowns at the outset of the second half but the Riots turned the ball over on their first three possessions.

Ralph Polk fumbled at Winslow’s 10-yard line and Winslow’s Josh Phair recovered; Lemelin intercepted Rhoads inside the W-30 and then Jacob Morin fell on Poulsen’s fumble at the W-26 after he had hauled in a 27-yard pass from Rhoads.

Winslow struck first in the game as David Higgins’ interception of a Rhoads screen pass and his 48-yard return set the Raiders up at the O-27.

Lemelin dashed eight yards to the two-yard line when he was hit hard and the ball popped up into the air to Raider right tackle Nick Bizier, who caught it at the one and walked into the end zone.

Orono struck quickly for three touchdowns in a span of 7:20 in the second quarter.

Kyle Bishop ran 24 yards with a quick pitch out around left end to tie it 7-7 at the 8:16 mark.

Then a 38-yard punt return by Poulsen gave the Riots the ball at the W-25 and Bishop capped a five-play drive with an 11-yard TD run again around the left side. Following Lemelin’s 12-yard punt, a 27-yard Rhoads to Kyle Bishop pass set the stage for Sal Casanas’ two-yard TD run with 56 seconds remaining.

Bishop suffered a concussion late in the half and missed the second half. He was treated and released after having X-rays at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor according to his father, Stephen Bishop.
