Officials announced recently that thanks to an annonymous $100,000 challenge grant, the Mount Desert Island YMCA building fund currently has amassed more than $2,500,000, more than 75 percent of its $3,250,000 goal.
The gift, made by an out-of-state donor, will match all contributions of at least $5,000 made before Jan. 1, 1996, effectively doubling the value of the next $100,00 in major gifts to the Y.
Phase I of the new MDI YMCA, which will include a six-lane competitive swimming pool, gym and fitness center, has a price tag of $2,900,000, including architectural and fund raising costs. Phase II, which includes a youth center, multi-purpose room, child care facilities and offices, is scheduled for construction as soon as the total goal is reached.
A groundbreaking date has not been announced.
