ORONO – Boston University proved to the University of Maine Black Bears that anybody seeking the Terriers’ national hockey championship is going to have to go through them to get it.

The Terriers simply had too much talent and physical strength for the Black Bears Tuesday night as they received a pair of goals apiece from Chris Drury and Shawn Bates to beat Maine 5-2 at Alfond Arena in a rematch of last year’s national championship game.

BU won that game 6-2.

The Terriers outshot the Bears 37-17 en route to their sixth win against one loss. They are 4-1 in Hockey East. Maine is 5-3-2, 1-2-2.

Bates’ second goal of the game, a power-play goal coming with 9:04 remaining, sewed up the win and Doug Wood added an insurance goal with 3:16 remaining.

Senior center Brad Purdie scored both goals for Maine and both came on the power play. Maine has now gone three games without an even-strength goal.

“We played well in every zone,” said BU Coach Jack Parker. “We forechecked well, so we didn’t have to spend too much time in our own zone.”

“One of our team goals was to beat Maine at Maine because we didn’t do it last year,” said sophomore center Drury. “This was a big thrill.”

“Right now, they’re better than we are. Who’s kidding who?” said Maine Coach Shawn Walsh. “I give them all the credit in the world. I thought they were a great team before they came here, and I think they’re a great team now.”

“(Blair) Allison kept us in the game and we were getting better in the third period. We had 22 attempts to their 12 in the third period. But we took a penalty 60 feet from the play and they capitalized,” said Walsh, referring to an interference penalty against Tony Frenette.

“The work habits were there, but our lack of discipline and game plan cost us,” said Maine junior defenseman and captain Jeff Tory.

During the game, Maine fans contributed $3,500 to the Travis Roy fund. BU’s Roy, a freshman from Yarmouth, was paralyzed when he crashed into the boards in the Terriers’ opener.

Against Maine, BU led 3-2 after two periods and BU goalie Tommy Noble made a pair of nice saves early in the third period to preserve BU’s lead.

He got his toe on Scott Parmentier’s in-close attempt off a Purdie pass and made a blocker save on Wayne Conlan’s screeching 30-foot slap shot from the right circle.

Then Bates gave the Terriers some breathing room when he one-timed a 20-footer into the upper far corner off a pass from Chris O’Sullivan. Bates was in the circle to Allison’s right.

“Chris put it the only place he could, and I just tried to get it on net,” said Bates.

Wood capped the scoring with a blistering 40-foot slap shot that zipped between the legs of Maine goalie Blair Allison.

After the teams swapped first-period goals, the Terriers built a 3-1 lead with goals by Drury and Bates 1:57 apart early in the second period.

Purdie, who had answered Drury’s first-period goal, pulled Maine within 3-2.

Purdie’s goals ended a personal 10-game goal-scoring drought dating back to the 4-3 triple overtime win over Michigan in the NCAA semifinals last season.

Drury opened the scoring with BU’s 10th shorthanded goal of the season.

The puck got caught in Maine defenseman Brett Clark’s skate, Drury poked it free and broke down the right wing before beating Allison with a 20-foot wrist shot past his blocker into the far corner.

Purdie tied it on the power play by scoring on Maine’s first shot on goal at the 9:41 mark.

Parmentier got the puck to Tory at the left point and his wrist shot toward the far post was swiped stomach-high out of the air by Purdie and into the short side corner.

Purdie’s 14-footer sailed over the glove of BU goalie Tom Noble.
