FLORENCEVILLE, New Brunswick – Wayne Middaugh of Toronto captured the McCain SuperSpiel ’95 with a 9-5 victory over Toronto’s Paul Savage on Sunday.
Middaugh finished the event with a perfect 6-0 record. He reached the final by downing Doug Johnston of Ottawa 6-5 and Savage reached the final with a 8-6 victory over Earle Morris of Ottawa.
The match began to turn after the seventh end when Savage and Middaugh were tied 5-5. Middaugh took a pair in the eighth after Savage’s final stone rolled too far.
Middaugh finished off Savage with another pair in the ninth when Savage attempted a difficult double takeout. The attempt left three stones close to the circle. A measurement showed Middaugh had picked up a pair. The 10th went scoreless.
With the win Middaugh, along with third Graeme McCarrel, second Ian Tetley and lead Scott Bailey, gain the final berth in the McCain TSN Skins Game in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a trip to the McCain SuperSpiel ’96 West next October in Manitoba.
