With the ’96 presidential election creeping up on us and the pitiful display of lack of leadership by our elected officials in Washington, D.C., these days being viewed by the entire world with disbelief, I have come to the startling realization, from my personal observations, which many may agree with but aren’t perhaps courageous enough to admit. My crystal clear revelation is that more truth and political common sense is revealed to us (the American public) by our professional comedians and cartoonists than the elected politicians who are running or not running (depending on your point of view) our U.S. government.

In view of this observation, I have seriously begun to think that we should genuinely consider nominating such personalities as Jay Leno (NBC’s Tonight Show host) and political cartoonist Jeff MacNelly as candidates for the offices which preside over our country’s operation and well being. They’d probably run things a lot simpler and smoother with just plain logical common sense, and they might even make us laugh at some of the ridiculously outrageous issues which are constantly trying to over-shadow the important things we, as a country, should truly be concerned with. Let’s face it, the amateur jokers who are presently in Washington can’t even manage to make us smile, neither humorously nor with gratitude. Gail J. VanWart Holden
