Walker sparks Husson victory> Braves roll to easy win over Mules

BANGOR – Husson College sophomore forward Emily Walker turned her ankle early in the game and had to be taken out.

But, much to Colby College’s dismay, she returned a few minutes later.

Walker proceded to score 14 of her career-high 24 points in the first half, including eight during a decisive 23-7 spurt, to lead the Braves to an impressive 85-52 women’s basketball victory over the Mules at Newman Gym Wednesday.

Husson, now 4-2, was leading 25-17 when Sue Ann Allen’s jumper from the left side of the key triggered the 23-7 spurt that closed out the half.

Kim Palmer’s free throw, a Walker foul shot, and a pretty passing play involving Allen and Becky Moholland that culminated in a Walker layup built the lead to 32-17.

Emily Larsen’s two free throws pulled Colby within 32-19 with 4:05 left, but Walker scored the next five points and, following a layup by Colby’s Lynn Kenoyer, Amanda Pomerleau nailed a pair of 3-pointers to build the lead to 43-21.

“Coach [Kissy Walker] has said some of us, like Sue Ann and me, have to step up and hit from the outside,” said Pomerleau, who explained that Husson’s imposing inside game leaves the guards open for perimeter jumpers.

She added that if the guards can nail the outside jumpers, that will open up the inside game even more.

Husson outscored Colby 5-3 over the remainder of the half and then scored the first 10 points of the second half to sew things up.

Walker, who transferred to Husson from New Hampshire College, also pulled down seven rebounds. Allen and Tara Leavitt tossed in 14 points apiece, Pomerleau finished with 13, and Beth Miller contributed 11.

“Emily is a very good player,” Pomerleau said.

Leavitt hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds, Moholland corraled six, and Pomerleau and Allen grabbed five rebounds each from their guard spots.

Maggie Drummond had 11 points for 0-2 Colby. Emily Larsen, Lynn Kenoyer, and Grace Perry scored eight apiece and Larsen pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Husson outrebounded the smaller Mules 44-31 and the guards did a good job getting the ball inside to the likes of Leavitt, Moholland, Walker and Beth Miller, who all stand at least 5-11.

“I was disappointed when I got hurt but, overall, I was happy with my game,” said the 5-foot-11 Walker. “We definitely took advantage of our height. We did a good job passing tonight. If they fronted our big people, we were lobbing the ball over them.”

“We weren’t getting any weak-side help and then we weren’t getting weak-side rebounding, either, so Husson got a lot of points off the offensive boards,” said Colby coach Tricia O’Brien.
