Fifth-year senior Wayne Conlan has quit the University of Maine hockey team.

Conlan, a right winger, called Maine coach Shawn Walsh on Thursday and announced his intention to leave the team.

Conlan played in nine of Maine’s first 10 games and didn’t have any points. He hasn’t dressed for a game since the Bears’ 5-2 loss to Boston University on Nov. 14. He was minus-four in the plus-minus category.

“I obviously wasn’t getting the ice time I should have been getting,” said Conlan. “It didn’t work out. Coach [Shawn Walsh] told me I had my best game against BU and the next thing you know, I’m out of the lineup.”

Walsh said, “I want to focus on players who want to play for us. I’m not going to dwell on it.”

Conlan, a speedy skater whose primary forte was his penalty killing, played in 89 games during his career and had 18 goals and 21 assists. He had eight of those goals during his freshman year.

He was also a starting outfielder for the baseball team three years ago, hitting .255 in 48 games.

Conlan is the second Maine winger to quit the team this season.
