Poulsen’s 31 leads Orono past MDI in OT

MOUNT DESERT – Erik Poulsen scored all of Orono’s 11 points in overtime to lift the Red Riots to an 81-74 schoolboy basketball win over the Mount Desert Island Trojans Wednesday night.

Poulsen hit the front end of a 1-and-1 with three seconds left to push the defending Eastern Maine Class B champion Trojans to overtime.

Poulsen drilled six 3-pointers in the game and finished with 31 points. Aaron Gavett added 17, while Jason White had 12 and Tim Ulrich tossed in 10.

Marc Corliss shook off early foul trouble to score 20 points for Mount Desert Island. Ben Ketchen and Matt Ketchen added 15 and 14, respectively, while Aaron Brown had 12.

At Millinocket, Corey Streams and Steve Osborne each scored six points in the pivotal second period while a tough Minutemen defense held Dexter’s big man, Brad Olson, in check.

Streams finished with 15 points to lead the Minutemen. Osborne had 11 and Shaun Illingworth and John Montgomery each scored 10.

For the Tigers, the 6-foot-8 Olson led the way with 15 points and 16 rebounds. James Kirk added 13 points and dished out five assists.

Keath Jonafsan and Tim Winters each scored for Lawrence.

Josh Wiersma got the win in goal for the Crusaders. Jason Poicier was in the net for 0-1 Lawrence.

At Houlton, Heather Wilde sank three free throws with less than a minute left in the second overtime to lift the Shiretowners to victory.

The Houlton defense held the Wolverines of East Millinocket scoreless in the final two minutes of the second overtime.

Heather Thomas paced the Shiretowners with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Jennifer Bell chipped in with 15 points and Wilde netted 13.
