Stearns 4, Brewer 3 (OT)
At Alfond Arena in Orono, the Stearns High School Minutemen appeared to have their first a win over Brewer wrapped up but then they wound up having to go to overtime to claim their first ever victory over the Witches.
Justin Grant, who had an apparent goal called back a minute earlier because it was ruled to have hit the crossbar, fired a 20-foot slap shot between Brewer goalie Shawn Murphy’s pads off a Josh Lynch pass at 2:26 of overtime to give the Minutemen a 4-3 win.
Stearns is now 2-0 and Brewer is 2-1.
Stearns had a seemingly safe 3-1 lead but the Minutemen took three penalties in the final 2:47 and the Witches received power play goals from Ben Ellis and Jason Seavey in the final 48 seconds to tie the game 3-3 and force the overtime.
With goalie Murphy pulled in favor of the extra attacker and Brewer with a six-to-three skater advantage, Ellis jammed a Seavey centering pass through Stearns goalie Jeremy Munoz with 48 seconds left to make it 3-2.
Grant took a hitting after the whistle penalty after the goal and the Witches again pulled Murphy and had a six-on-three advantage when Stearns appeared to sew it up with a clear attempt to ice the puck.
But a Brewer played knocked it down at center ice and Chris O’Donnell raced down the slot. Munoz saved his 30-foot slap shot and the puck rebounded to the side of the net where Seavey flipped a wrist shot into the net from a difficult angle.
Trevor Watt’s first-period goal, a 10-footer into the short side after he circle the net, gave Brewer a 1-0 lead although the Witches were outshot 19-5 in the first period.
Frank Bowley tied it in the second period by tapping hom a Josh Perry shot and Aaron Thibodeau’s screened slap shot made it 2-1 later in the period.
Lynch made it 3-1 by whacking the second rebound behind Murphy in the third period.
Stearns outshot Brewer 40-23.
