ORONO – Mark Blaine scored the game winner off a Jason Seavey assist at 11 minutes, 47 seconds in the second period as Brewer edged Hampden 2-1 in schoolboy hockey action Tuesday night at Alfond Arena.

Seavey started the scoring as he converted an Andy Thomas assist at 7:01 in the first period. Later in the period, Hampden’s Tyler Whitehouse converted a double assist from Rob King and Jason Yehle at 2:22 to tie the score.

Shawn Murphy saved 17 of 18 shots as the Witches improved to 3-3.

Ian Dilts turned away 18 of 20 shots for the Broncos, now 1-3.

Gardiner 5, Stearns 4

At Alfond Arena, visiting Gardiner handed Stearns its first loss on the strength of a three-goal effort by Luke Takatsu.

Takatsu found the back of the net twice in the first period as the Tigers jumped out to a 4-2 lead.

Justin Grant scored for Stearns 11:34 into the second period to cut it to 4-3, but Takatsu answered less than three minutes later in the period with the game-winner to complete his hat trick.

Chris Durgen added two assists for 2-4 Gardiner and Jared Baker stopped 25 of 29 shots in goal.

Josh Lynch had a hand in all four of Stearns’ goals with two goals and two assists. Goalie Jeremy Munoz turned away 33 of 38 shots for the 3-1 Minutemen.

Boys basketball

CAHS 104, Washburn 74

At Washburn, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill lit up the scoreboard for 33 points in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to an easy win.

Senior forward Matt Townshend burned the Beavers for 33 points, including five three-pointers. Ben Allen and Mitchell Orser added 24 and 22 points, respectively, for the winners.

Six-foot-four center Trent Cunningham paced Washburn with 26 points, including two dunks, and Trevor Collins had 13. Michael Kelley chipped in with 10.

At Fort Kent, Ryan Martin poured in 35 points to carry the host Warriors to victory.

The Warriors turned an eight-point lead at halftime into a 19-point advantage after three quarters by outscoring Fort Fairfield 25-14 in the decisive third quarter.

Jason Nadeau added 14 points for Fort Kent and Corey Thibodeau 12. Matt Thibodeau contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Don DeMerchant’s 21 points led Fort Fairfield while Jon Nichols added 14 and Dave Bernard 13.
