Bears crush T’birds

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The University of Maine Black Bears opened their six-games-in-eight-days exhibition tour of Canadian colleges with a 10-2 win over the University of British Columbia at the Thunderbirds Sports Center Wednesday evening.

Sophomore left winger Scott Parmentier had a hat trick and the Bears erupted for three goals in the final 3:49 of the first period to snap a 2-2 tie.

“We looked terrible for the first 10 minutes and great for the last 50,” said interim head coach Greg Cronin, filling in for the suspended Shawn Walsh. “BC didn’t have much depth and wasn’t fast so we tried to create an up-tempo game.”

Just six seconds after Matt Sharrers’ power play goal had tied the game 2-2, Tony Frenette gave Maine the lead for good with 3:49 left in the period. Reg Cardinal’s shorthanded goal came 1:43 later and Tim Lovell added a power play goal with 22 seconds left.

Cardinal and Lovell had two goals apiece for Maine with Roenick, Dan Shermerhorn and Frenette contributing a goal and two assists apiece. Steve Kariya had two assists.

Sharrers and Doug Ast had a goal and an assist each for BC, which was outshot 17-0 in the second period.
