GORHAM – Tara Leavitt and Emily Walker scored 15 points each Friday to lead Husson College of Bangor to an 89-69 victory over Westbrook College in the first round of the Women’s Maine State Basketball Tournament at the University of Southern Maine’s Hill Gymnasium.
St. Joseph’s of Standish also advanced with an 82-46 win over the University of Maine-Machias to set up today’s second-round game between the Braves and the Lady Monks at 6 p.m.
In Friday’s other matchups, the University of Maine-Farmington downed UM-Presque Isle 70-56 and the University of Southern Maine edged Colby College of Waterville 70-61.
Husson took a 17-point halftime advantage en route to victory. Sue Ann Allen scored 12 points in a balanced effort for the Braves, while Becky Moholland and Beth Miller had 11 points each.
Chris Grillon paced Westbrook with 11 points.
St. Joe’s downed the Clippers behind a 25-point, 12-rebound performance by Kendra Marquis. Jen Sparrow netted 24 points and Kristen Chavarie chipped in with 11.
For UMM, Danielle Riebe tossed in a game-high 28 points and hauled down eight rebounds. Ann-Marie Cochrane and Becky Tower each added 14 points.
UM-Farmington went on a 13-0 second half run to put away the Owls. Marsha Hamlin tossed in 27 points and Margo Bailey ripped down 11 rebounds to go along with 12 points for the winners.
Kelly Picard paced the way for UMPI with 16 points and Kim Chatman scored 14.
Sophomore center Joanna Brown tallied 14 of her 24 points in the second half to power the Huskies past the White Mules. Lori Towle also dished out six assists to go with her 13 points and Karen Raven chipped in 11 points for the winners.
For Colby, Emily Larsen, Grace Perry, and Kathleen Pigeon scored 11 points apiece.
