Witches edge Cougars to get `A’ playoff berth

BREWER – The Brewer Witches pulled out the must-have win, defeating Mt. Blue of Farmington 73-71 in schoolboy basketball action at Brewer High Thursday night.

The Witches shot 7 for 8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and played stingy defense to earn an Eastern Maine Class A tourney berth.

Jason Leighton poured in 23 points, including nine free throws, and Troy Leavitt added 13 points. Michael Johnston put in 12 for Brewer.

Ryan Fortier blew in 20 points for Mount Blue, Troy Wilkins knocked in 14 points. Jeremy Bryant had 13 points and Dustin Ireland had 11 points.

At Hampden, the Broncos hit 4-of-6 free throws in the last minute of the overtime period to pull off the win.

Aaron Peppard led the Broncos with 32 points and 14 rebounds. Peppard scored 29 points in the second-half and seven points in overtime. Dan Marquez added 12 points.

Norm Rogers and Matt Korsman each had 15 points to lead Morse. Sam Clark tossed in 14 for the Shipbuilders from Bath.

At Presque Isle, the Wildcats outscored Nokomis 33-5 in the third quarter to turn a close game into a blowout.

Senior guard Eric Saucier notched a triple-double to pace Presque Isle with 24 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. A.J. Cloukey made eight of nine attempts from the floor to finish with 16 points, while Chad Graham and Aaron Martin added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Rodney Rause led Nokomis with 12 points.

At Augusta, the No. 1 Dirigo Cougars of Dixfield took a 19-7 halftime lead and never looked back in posting a victory over the No. 5 Carrabc Cobras of North Anson in Western Maine Class C girls action Wednesday.

Dirigo faces No. 6 Madison Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in the Western Maine championship game.

Rebecca Fletcher led the Cougars with 16 points.

At Augusta, Jennifer Robinson scored 13 points in the fourth quarter as No. 2 Upper Kennebec Valley of Bingham pulled away from No. 3 Hyde in Western Maine Class D quarterfinal action Thursday.

Valley-Bingham will face No. 1 Richmond, a 51-39 winner over Windham Christian, at 1:05 p.m. Saturday for the Western Maine championship.

Robinson finished with 26 points to lead the Cavaliers. Bekah Hobbs added 19 with three baskets from behind the 3-point line.

Megan Merlot and Deanna Saulsbury each scored 10 points for Hyde.
