CALAIS — Peter Harvey, who has served as principal for the Calais Middle School for the past three years, will be the new superintendent of Union 106. He will replace retiring Superintendent Richard Marx on July 1.
Harvey, who was selected from a field of nine candidates, has more than seven years’ experience as a superintendent. Marx said Tuesday that Harvey’s experience includes service as a teaching- principal in Topsfield, and as superintendent of schools in Milo, Greenville and Patten.
Marx is retiring after 38 years in education, the past 33 years as a superintendent. He has served as superintendent of Union 106 for 12 years.
`I feel he [Harvey] is an excellent choice based upon the fact that this school union is heading into a different era. The last few years we have been concentrating on facilities. … The immediate future is going to be dealing with curriculum development … staff development and things of that nature. What he has done at the middle school in that area has been outstanding, and I think he will serve the district well,” Marx said.
Union 106 includes Calais, Robbinston, Alexander, Baring and Crawford. Harvey will be responsible for about 1,000 students.
“It is the biggest school system in Washington County. You have five individual towns, so there is five of everything. … If this was a single school district you would have 168 [State] reports that have to be filed [annually]. But where you have five separate school systems you have to file 840 reports,” Marx said.
Asked if he would miss preparing those state reports, Marx said, “No, as I reported long ago, I plan to go fishing.”
