The ferry trip from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island has an added attraction this year. Fog permitting, travelers can check on the progress of North America’s largest multispan bridge, the Northumberland Strait Bridge that will connect Prince Edward Island with the Canadian mainland.
Construction of the 7.8-mile-long bridge, scheduled to open in May 1997, will employ close to 2,000 workers around the clock this year.
The New Brunswick end of the bridge now extends about 4,000 feet into the Northumberland Strait on 14 support piers. The approaches on both sides including a P.E.I. toll plaza and a 4-mile paving project on the New Brunswick side, will be completed this year.
The $800 million, two-lane bridge will have its own snow removal and emergency vehicles and will be monitored from end to end 24 hours a day by closed-circuit TV.
