PORTLAND — The state has been awarded $759,000 from the federal Victims of Crime Act of 1994. The fund is financed by fines and penalties assessed against convicted criminals and collected by the U.S. attorneys throughout the country.
Last year’s grant of $524,000 benefited victims of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault, as well as victims of other crimes, U.S. Attorney Jay P. McCloskey said Friday.
Convicted criminals in federal court are assessed a basic $50 fee for each criminal count, as well as other large fines. This money is pooled in the Crime Victims Fund and annually allotted to states based on population.
Each state receives at least $200,000 a year, said Shane VerPlanck, the victim-witness coordinator for McCloskey’s office.
