I want to express my gratitude to the Greater Bangor community for their recent outpouring of support for my friend, Yong Jones. The Baltimore police have stated that they have received hundreds of letters, phone calls and petitions from people in this area asking that the police continue vigorous efforts to solve the murder of Mrs. Jones’ son, Laurence Jones Jr.
In addition, a lengthy petition with nearly 1,700 signatures was recently delivered to Baltimore Police Commissioner Thomas Frazier. Sen. William Cohen sent two of his Washington staff people to deliver that petition. As reported in the March 9-10 Bangor Daily News, Commissioner Frazier refused to meet with Sen. Cohen’s representatives. He accused Cohen of “turning this into a media event.” Not only did Frazier insult Cohen and his staff persons, he also insulted the many Bangor-area citizens who sent their sentiments on behalf of Mrs. Jones.
Hopefully, the Baltimore police have heard a clear message from Maine that we care about the murder of one of our native sons, and we expect to see justice prevail.
Mrs. Jones and I would appreciate it if people would continue to contact Commissioner Thomas Frazier, Baltimore Police Department, 601 East Fayette St., Baltimore, Md. 21202, regarding this case. The voice of the people is the last hope Mrs. Jones has to bring some closure to her loss. Brenda Lawson Winterport
