The University of Maine dropped two games Sunday against the University of Delaware, losing the first game 2-1 and the second 4-3, both in the bottom of the seventh.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Keith Croteau singled, Matt Huff’s sacrifice bunt sent Croteau to third, and Tony Bianchi’s sacrafice fly to left field scored Croteau.

In the bottom of the seventh, Delaware’s Ethan Jack singled to left and went to third when Dan Travitis singled and advanced on an error when third baseman Tony Fernandez threw wildly to first. Jamie McSherry’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Jack and sent Travitis to third.

Matt Ardiezzone’s single to center field scored Travitis, giving the Blue Hens the 2-1 advantage.

In game two, Delaware went ahead after the first inning ended in a 2-2 tie when Dan Colunio homered to left to make it 3-2.

In the sixth, Maine tied the game with two outs. John Ellis doubled down the left-field line and Rex Turner singled to left, putting runners on first and third. Fernandez then grounded to third, scoring Ellis and putting runners on first and second on an error when Delaware third baseman Brian August threw short of first. Greg Jarvis popped up to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Delaware’s Tim Mahony led off with a single to right. Ken Giles pinch ran for Mahony, and Maine reliever Garret Quinn came in to pitch for the next batter. Jack’s sacrifice bunt sent Giles to second, Andre Duffie was walked by Quinn, putting runners on first and second. McSherrie singled to center scoring Giles, giving the Hens a 4-3 win.

On Saturday, the Black Bears split with the Towson State Tigers at Bordick Field in Towson, Maryland.

In game one, the Tigers scored three runs in third inning and four runs in the fourth inning to beat Maine 10-2.

Mike Fleming drove in three runs to lead Towson State. Joe Vuotto hit a solo home run and Todd Hartshorn ripped a two-run double to help Chris Karabinus get his first win of the season.

Karabinus gave up three hits, walked three batters, and struck out four.

Nick Caiazzo and Rex Turner drove in a run apiece to lead Maine. Andy Estabrook took the loss and dropped to 1-2. Estabrook allowed three hits and walked five.

The Black Bears rebounded in game two as Josh Harriman pitched six scoreless innings to record his first victory of the year 4-0.

Harriman gave up only two hits, one walk, and struck out four to lead Maine. Huf doubled in a run and stole a base as Tony Bianchi hit a pinch-hit RBI-single. Jeff Longo and John Ellis drove in a run apiece to round out the Maine scoring.

James Vallillo doubled to lead the Tigers. Andy Wetlinger took his second loss going six innings and giving up four hits, walking five, and no strikeouts.

Husson wins two

At Waterbury, Conn., the Braves took two games from Teikyo Post behind the hitting of Andy Boure, who went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader.

In the first game, Boure singled, doubled and homered to help Mark Hreben collect his third win 7-3. Hreben struck out five batters. Roy Perry also added a two-run double for the winners.

For Teikyo Post, Rob Porter ripped a two-run double.

In the second game, John Novak hit three singles to pace Husson to the 12-4 pounding. Andy Boure ripped two singles and belted a three-run home run and Sandy McQuaig drove in a run on a single and a double. Eric Murray recorded his fourth win of the season for the Braves.

Steve Banche doubled to drive in two runs for Teikyo Post.
