VEAZIE — Town officials in Veazie were briefed Monday on the effort to build a bike path from one end of the town to the other. The project will be funded by a grant of up to $132,000 from the Maine Department of Transportation.
If all goes according to plan, the bike path could be completed this summer, Town Manager William Reed said Tuesday.
The section of bike path to be built in Veazie is one piece of a regional project that also includes Bangor, Orono and Old Town.
When similar projects in the participating communities are finished, there will be a continuous bike path from Bangor following portions of Stillwater Avenue and Route 2A through Veazie, Orono, and the University of Maine campus to the Old Town-Orono YMCA.
Town councilors also put on a fast track their search for an owner’s representative to guard the town’s interests during the construction of a proposed new elementary school.
Town Manager William Reed said the town is seeking proposals from firms and individuals interested in doing the job. The plan is to review candidates by April 16. Half of the cost for hiring the owner’s representative would be reimbursed by the state.
Reed also was authorized to negotiate with Sawyer Environmental Services for a second monthly curbside collection day for the community’s recyclable materials. The cost must not exceed $1,850 a year.
After discussing Reed’s job performance in executive session, town councilors extended his contract for another year.
